По рекомендации рачительного хозяина Марка Порция Катона Цензора (II в. до н.э.) рабам, помимо хлеба, оливкового масла, рыбного рассола и подпорченных фруктов, полагалось выдавать в год от 150 до 260 литров вина. Это получается почти до бутылки в день. Если довольствоваться хлебом и оливковым маслом и отказаться от рассола и фруктов, - вполне себе правильное питание.

quadrantal = 28.4 л
modius = 8.8 л
sextarius = 0.56 л
hemina = 0.28 л

Таким образом, в год до 284 литров вина, т.е. больше бутылки в день!

А однажды в римской газете "Вечерний оракул" написали, что Марк Порций Катон разбавляет виной водой. Обиженный рабовладелец явился к редактору и потребовал, чтобы материалы предварительно показывались ему. Так имя "Цензор" стало нарицательным. :-)

Очевидно, так и было. :) А если бы написали, НЕ разбавляет водой - это бы потянуло на обвинение в варварстве!

В обязанность римских цензоров - устроителей ценза, то есть военно-учётной переписи населения - входило распределять людей по центуриям войска. Бедняки, не способные приобрести себе оружие для ополчения, записывались в центурии низших разрядов, но туда могли, решением цензора, переводиться и недостойные богачи. Цензоры могли даже изгнать сенатора из сената, признав его поведение недостойным (что, кстати, в качестве цензора сделал и Марк Порций Катон Цензор: "удалил из сената Люция Фламинина за то, что тот в Галлии для развлечения какой-то блудницы приказал тут же на пиру задушить одного человека, приведенного из тюрьмы")

А вот газет в Риме не было. Таблички были...
